Farmer Jim shares his perspective:
When people or animals eat, their foo is broken down by the natural body processes with the help of micro-organisms into microscopic parts then absorbed and used to replenish their cells. The microscopic components and various combinations of minerals and water create the cells of the different plants and animals. This food looks, taste, grows like instructed by their individual microbiome. If the growing plant
needs a certain mineral to develop a new leaf, and that mineral is not available in the soil, we do not get the new leaf, or we get a deformity. For plants and animals to be healthy we need a complete spectrum of required food available. Our best chance is to consume the widest variety, add herbs and spices and mix in as much natural plants as possible, remember it is broken down into microscopic parts so even a
pinch of this or that is absorbed. The common denominator in all life are the micro-organisms, they’re in everything around us. It has been suggested we humans are only 10% human, and 90% microbes that fill in the spaces. Some of the same species of microbes that inhabit my gut, are also inhabiting my cat’s gut and doing the same jobs.
Those same species also inhabit the soil at the farm. There are pre-historic microbes surviving in the ice packs in Antarctica, seconds old ones replicating in the rain forest in Brazil, under the sand on the beaches, and everywhere else. If I am trying to raise and feed my kids, by trying to raise and feed my cows, by trying to raise and feed my grass, by raising and feeding my soil food web, it turns out I am here to help the very microbes we all rely on for life. My goal is to allow the microbial populations to
flourish and prosper and reduce the detrimental activities. Acres and acres of winter wheat produces some of the best gains possible in cattle, yet those gains will
stop if the cattle are left in that monoculture too long. Animal’s have an innate ability to select food they need, humans have lost their innate ability to eat what they are missing in their diet, instead now crave somewhat pre-digested highly processed foods with sweeteners and artificial flavorings. By selecting beef that has been offered a great selection of pasture (salad bar) we incorporate the animals’ natural ability to balance its diet. If an animal is allowed to consume the plants it craves and
thus the nutrients, it can develop a nutrient dense flesh. Animals standing in a feed lot do not have an opportunity to select and graze rather have the best scientifically designed ration given to them day after day. One of the doctors on a youtube video suggested the flesh of a grass-fed beef that must work for its’ dinner was comparable to that of an athlete, while the feedlot beef looks more like an obese, weak individual.
Some of the best science is now starting to show the synergy of foods, some people suffering from inflammation react favorably to adding turmeric to their diet, when they combine black pepper to the turmeric they can absorb thousands of times more of the suspected reacting part. This rivals the power of some pharmaceuticals. Do not underestimate the power of combining a mouthful of this and a mouthful of that compared to the commercially available feed rations with chemical fortifications and
enhancements. We try to provide the most diverse pastures by grazing open, heavy wooded, and mixed pastures, also sourcing hay from more than one place. Moving cattle often. Sourcing minerals from different suppliers. And anything else we can think of to give the animals the greatest selection. The cattle are what they
eat, and we are what we eat. When this country was being settled, the mountain men lived isolated lives away from other people. No access to medical care, shopping, companionship, no advise from others. They observed nature everyday, they decided to consume the corresponding part of the animal they were having trouble with
in their own body. As an example, if they were having trouble with their knees and ankles, they would cook the knee and ankle joints with the cartilage, seine, gristle and bones into a soup. Hoping the animal would have selected the right foods to build their healthy joints, then by consuming that broth, transfer health giving components to their ailing joints. The practice persist so it must have had a positive effect.
Now science has debulked the practice saying our body breaks down the component into their individual elements and those microscopic elements are also available to the body in other ways and that practice would not transfer from knee to knee. A chemical analysis of the bone broth, list some of the same ingredients found on the supplement bottles that could help with arthritis and joint pain. If you believe the animal had the opportunity to select the proper combination of plants in the proper ratio to have the synergy, bone broth may be just as effective for some as those bottles of joint
supplements in the store after a long enough time to allow for joint and cartilage to replace itself one cell at a time, with a better joint cell.
